Croatian is a south Slavic language which is used primarily in Croatia and by Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is closedly related to Bosnian and Serbian, which are all mutually intelligible. Croatian is composed of three main dialects, Cakavian, Kajkavian, and Stovakian. Before the breakup of Yugoslavia, Serbo-Croatian was considered to be one language; since the fall, Bosnians, Croatians, and Serbians have have all viewed their languages as more distinct from one another. However, there are some linguists who assert that they have always been distinct languages, and their status should be compared to Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian.
