The Linguaphone Starter Course

The Linguaphone Course has been carefully researched, designed and produced to satisfy the needs both of complete beginners and of those who already know a little of the language and wish to carry on, brush up, or improve on what they have learnt. The emphasis throughout is on using the language for practical, day-to-day purposes; and the course therefore steadily develops the learner's competence principally in listening, understanding, and speaking, and also in reading and the beginnings of writing. All that you need for efficient and enjoyable learning is provided within the course. Some of its key features are these:

The success of Linguaphone is based on the simple Linguaphone method of Listen, Understand, Speak. This is the natural way to learn a new language.

Listen
This is the essential first step of the Linguaphone Method. A key feature is that all recordings on your cassettes or CDs are entirely in the language you are learning, spoken by native speakers of that language. Although this may initially sound strange, it is recognized as the best and quickest way to learn a language. You are immediately introduced to the new language as it really is spoken. You will be surprised how quickly and naturally you become accustomed to the new rhythms and sounds.

Understand
At the beginning you will not understand all the new language you hear on the recordings. Because of this, the case contains a bilingual handbook which gives you word by word and phrase by phrase translations and explanations of the language. The printed versions of the recordings can be found in your textbook and by following these you will develop your reading ability in your new language.

Speak
With Linguaphone you are encouraged to start speaking from the very first lesson, first imitating the native speakers featured on the recordings, and then actually taking part in the conversations yourself. Lesson by lesson new topics, words, and phrases are introduced and with each step forward your conversational skills will develop.

Course Structure:

There are forty lessons in the course, divided into four levels of ten lessons each. The last lesson in each level is a progress test. Material for each lesson is provided in the handbook, on audio cassette, and in the textbook.

  • Handbook
The handbook guides you through the course and provides all the support necessary for your study. For each lesson it contains instructions for all activities and exercises, lists of new words with English equivalents, translations of the dialogues (in Level one only), and notes on the grammar and cultural background, a glossary of grammatical terms, a grammar appendix, and an alphabetical word list.
  • 4 to 6 cassettes
Each cassette corresponds to a level of the course and contains the recorded texts in the target language; an extra cassette contains the information needed to get started in the course. For each lesson there are dialogues or narratives and recorded exercises; they are presented entirely in the target language. There is also a reference section presenting the sounds of the language. This is placed at the beginning of side A of cassette three, so that it can easily be used during study of the first two levels.
  • Textbook
The textbook contains the language texts for each lesson. These are the recorded dialogues or narratives, the recorded exercises, and the written exercises. It also contains a section listing the recorded sounds of the language, and a key section for the exercises.
