Language Learning Tips
Tip #3: The Most Important Thing is to Participate
By Rodman Reynolds
Even if you’re in a live situation with no formal training, the nifty thing is that if you listen attentively and try to speak even when you only know a few words, you’ll pick up enough just from participating in conversations that your ability to function on an everyday basis will develop rapidly. As vast as a language’s inventory of words may be, the fact is that the number of words and structural phrases needed to speak on a daily basis is relatively small. These are also the words and phrases you will hear repeated, all day long, every day. This is a very comforting fact, because when you’re in a live speaking situation in a foreign language, you’re guaranteed to hear something new, and you’re guaranteed to have situations where a minute later you can’t remember what you just learned. Don’t worry - if it’s important, you’re going to hear it again… and again… and again… But only by participating actively can you hope to gain a handle on these important elements at all. Many people live for years in foreign language environments and never gain a grasp on even the basics of the language, but there’s really no reason why it should be that way.
Until next time,
Rodman Reynolds
