Language is a Channel to Understanding
As the fighting in Iraq begins to settle down, the much larger task of restoration and reconstruction is still at hand. Communication will be key for these tasks, and of course, language issues will be a constant challenge for all involved.
A recent item in the press tells how one soldier who knew how to speak Arabic was inundated with lines of Iraqi citizens asking him questions and trying to gain information from him. In another instance, an Iraqi family cheerfully greeted and served lunch to three soldiers once they realized that one of those soldiers spoke Iraqi Arabic. In these cases, knowledge of the language produced positive results. Another story tells of how not knowing simple Iraqi phrases such as "stop" (wugaf) may have contributed to the shooting of a civilian and the injury of a soldier.
These cases illustrate how language can either be a barrier to understanding of a channel to understanding. Along with learning a foreign language, one also gains the knowledge of a culture that will further broaden ones views and ideas.
The increased interest in the Arabic language alone is apparent in our top sellers here at Multilingual Books. Other languages such as Spanish, Thai and Portuguese are always popular, too. It does not necessarily require world events to spark language interest. Some people are inquiring about language to be more in touch with their respective heritages (Latvian, Finnish and Twi are perfect examples). Now more than ever, language and language learning are playing a vital role in everyone's life.

Last month we conducted a poll rather than a trivia question. The poll question was: What is your favorite foreign language (non-English) film? Top 10 answers are below.
1. Amelie, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (2001) - France Thanks to all who participated. Our winner, selected at random, is Alex C., whose favorite foreign movie is Cinema Paradiso. Congratulations Alex! Many of these great titles and many others are available at our foreign video page. Videos are available in a variety of languages including Spanish, Italian, French, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. This month we return to a trivia question. The following words are from what language?

Tanikalang Ginto (Philippine Golden Links)
Tanikalang Ginto (Philippine Golden Links) claims to be "the Philippines' Most Comprehensive Web Directory", and I see no reason to doubt this. The site contains hundreds (perhaps thousands) of links to Philippine-related sites, most with short descriptions. Great for anyone interested in Filipino culture.
Check it out at http://www.filipinolinks.com.
