Knowing More Languages Uses More Brain Power

According to research by Wellcome Trust in Britain, people who speak Mandarin use more of their brain than English speakers. Due to the tonal aspects of the language, Mandarin speakers use both sides of their brain to process sound variations. This also applies to people who speak many other languages. The researchers found that many different parts of the brain are used to interpret sounds and words. In the studies, when English speakers heard English, the left temporal lobe became very active. Both the right and left lobes became active when Mandarin speakers heard the language. The right lobe processes the melody of words and intonation.

The best way to exercise the brain for more power would be to study languages, this study suggests. The benefits of language learning are abundant; cultural awareness, historical understanding, career opportunities, friends, loves, etc. Now, it is apparent that it strengthens our right lobe - the lobe that we use for processing melody. Yet another way to understand our world.

Trivia Contest

Last month's trivia questions and answers:

What is the least widely spoken language? (Hint: There are actually several languages with only 1 known speaker. Any one of these will do.)

Well, we never thought we'd see this; we received no correct answers to last month's question! There were many acceptable answers: Luo, Eyak, Klamath, Mapia, and Yupik are some of the languages with only one known remaining speaker, according to Ethnologue: Languages of the World. Better luck this time to our entrants!

This month's trivia question:

A little courtesy can go a long way in a foreign country! The following words mean "Please" and "Thank you" - in which languages?

Vær så venlig; Tak.
Por favor; Obrigado
Os gwelwch yn dda; Diolch
Pakisuyo; Salamat
Nceda; Enkosi

The answers and the winner will be in our next newsletter. Winner will receive their choice of one Talk Now or World Talk language CD-ROM! No purchase necessary to enter.
