Bilingualism On The Rise
One in five people speak a language other than English in American homes. Commonly spoken languages are Spanish, Chinese and Russian. While this is a well-known phenomenon in for example California and New York, states such as Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina are also now seeing a marked rise in bilingual residents.
Why? Perhaps because of an immigration surge, according to 2000 Census figures, in the ten years before the census was taken. The Census itself was printed in Spanish, Tagalog, and Korean, among other languages. This surge is also reflected in the population of California, New Mexico, and Texas.
Bilingual speakers are enjoying increasing exposure in American culture at large and many people and institutions need or want to communicate with these people in their primary or birth languages. Marketers are changing the way they produce ad campaigns by infusing foreign language and cultural references to target those who speak different languages. Government agencies are adapting to this trend, for instance school districts are finding they need bilingual teachers. Emergency and social services workers also often may need foreign language skills. Since companies and institutions are in need of bilingual speakers for progress, learning a language can be an essential step for many people who seek a successful and exciting career.
As might be expected, language learning overall is on the upswing as well. The Modern Language Association recently released a study showing that in all, 1.4 million students took a foreign language course last fall at U.S. colleges and universities. This is the highest number of language students ever recorded and a 17.9% increase since 1998, the last year the MLA compiled statistics. In comparison, undergraduate enrollment increased 7.5% in that period. The increase is broad based, with American Sign Language and Arabic being two of the fastest growing languages being studied. Arabic, Dari, Pashto and Farsi are also becoming an important part of many people's lives for vital reasons. We at Multilingual Books are proud to offer the latest language products for anyone wanting or needing to learn a new language at any age.
