Happy Holidays Around the World
The winter months bring celebration for cultures around the world. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Ramadan are widely observed by many people and cultures.
Christmas is enjoyed by millions of people around the world. Families gather and gifts are exchanged on December 25 to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. Of course, Santa Claus is also a popular icon of the holiday. Santa Claus comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas, a reduction of Sint Nikolaas (Saint Nicholas). The real Saint Nicholas having been a bishop, Santa's red and white costume was derived from a bishop's robes.
Hanukkah (Chanukah) honors the Jewish Festival of Lights. It celebrates the victory of the Maccabees and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. A menorah holds nine candles that are lit each night and gifts are exchanged. Eight of these candles honor the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days. This year, the eight days are December 19 to December 26.
Kwanzaa is widely celebrated by African Americans from December 26 to January 1. Each day honors a principle with a candle being lit and gifts exchanged. The seven candles on a kinara represent (in Kiswahili) Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ugima (collective work), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity) and Imani (faith). Kwanzaa, which translates to "first fruits", began in 1966, started by Maulana (Master-Teacher) Ron Karenga.
Ramadan is a time for religious observation and contemplation in the Islamic faith. It begins at the sighting of the crescent moon that starts the ninth Islamic month. During this time ties to family and community are strengthened. For a month, observers assert their faith in many ways including fasting during the daytime. The 'Eid-ul-Fitr (Festival of Fast Breaking) is celebrated at month's end.
However you celebrate this winter season, Multilingual Books wishes you the best and a very happy new year!
