Saint-Exupéry Crash Site Confirmed
In 1944, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, reknowned author and pilot, set off on an Allied reconnaissance mission from Corsica. He never returned. The wreckage of the airplane last flown by Saint-Exupéry, missing for nearly 60 years, has been found near the coast of Marseille.
Best known for the beloved fable The Little Prince that he wrote and illustrated, Saint-Exupéry was also a successful novelist and a distinguished and daring pilot. In peacetime he flew international mail (at the time an extremely dangerous profession), and his writing was often based on these experiences. He received the Croix de Guerre for his service during WWII.
Although the remains of the plane have been discovered, the cause of the crash remains a mystery. No combat damage or other clues have been found in the wreckage. "Saint-Ex", as he was known to friends, had been having health problems. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning variant he was flying was a fast and powerful but temperamental craft. And of course he was flying a military mission in a war zone. The particulars of the crash may never be known.
Rich with imagination and allegory, The Little Prince tells the fascinating tale of a childlike prince's interplanetary adventures. He encounters many strange characters and surprises such as witnessing forty-four sunsets in one day. This is a wonderful tale for children and adults alike. We offer this fantastical fable in over forty languages (in some cases several dialects). In any language this enthralling story takes you to delightful new heights. Order your copy or find out more at our Little Prince page.
