Foreign Language Conferences: A Great Way To Learn

For teachers or students of foreign language, the conferences arranged by the various language associations can be a fun way to learn more about the methods and products for learning foreign languages. We recently attended several of these shows as a vendor where we came across many great products and were very pleased to see a serious interest in new solutions by teachers.

The Modern Language Association Annual Convention is held every December. We attended the 2003 San Diego show which was fantastic. This year it will be held in Phildelphia. From the MLA website: Founded in 1883, the Modern Language Association of America provides opportunities for its members to share their scholarly findings and teaching experiences with colleagues and to discuss trends in the academy. See www.mla.org for more information.

The American Council of Foreign Language Teachers has a well attended annual show which will be in Chicago in November this year. We will have a booth. They also have several regional shows each year. The regional conferences can be easier to get to and still have a good variety of seminars and vendors. From the ACTFL website: "The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages is the only national organization dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction. ACTFL is an individual membership organization of more than 7,000 foreign language educators and administrators from elementary through graduate education, as well as government and industry." See www.actfl.org for more information. Some of the seminar titles from this years ACTFL include:

Evaluating Our Students' Speaking Skills
Moviemaking in the Foreign Language Classroom
A Picture Paints a Thousand Words... Communicating Through Visual Prompts

Another great reason to attend these conferences is that they're a lot of fun! The Southwest association of ACTFL threw a wonderful conference this year in sunny Albuquerque, a warm and beautiful setting to say the least. At the end of the conference a 5 member mariachi band played and sang, while food and drink was served. Everyone and I mean everyone joined in the fun while the band continued playing. Later, awards were given to some hard working teachers, who gave short speeches. So if you decide to attend a language conference, you just may end up having a good time as well.

Check our link page shortly for our own list of language conferences. If you run a language conference email us at info@multilingualbooks.com and we will be happy to include you.
