2005 American Council of Foreign Language Teachers Report

Every year several important language conferences are held. ACTFL is one of the biggest and best with over 6000 teachers and 3000 exhibitors in attendance. ACTFL 2005 was held in the scenic harbor district of Baltimore, land of the delicious crab cake, amongst
other things. As you might guess, I greatly enjoyed the beauty and hospitality of Baltimore and its people. This year the theme was The Year of Languages as 2005 was declared by ACTFL as the year of languages.
I attended this year with Steve Eatock from Eurotalk, makers of Talk Now and World Talk language software. Being on the exhibit hall floor is fun and exciting as you get to talk to hundreds of teachers from all over the world. It was also great fun demoing Talk Now software, using the speak and repeat function to try my accent in Chinese, Bulgarian, and many other languages. The conferences and seminars the teachers attend are important in bringing the art and science of language teaching forward.
Exhibits spanned the gamut from products and services as you might expect to government agencies to countries wishing to promote their language or tourism agendas. The Switzerland exhibit was interesting, displaying scenes from the multi-faceted country which has 4 official native languages (German, French, Italian, Romansh). Also featured were several groups that can help you plan school trips to anywhere in the World.
This year Ken Stewart, a high school Spanish teacher from Chapel Hill, NC was named the first recipient of the ACTFL National Language Teacher of the Year Award. Stewart, whose teaching career spans 19 years, is a National Board Certified Spanish Teacher. Congratulations, Mr. Stewart!
If you are a teacher, involved in the language business, or even a student, these conferences are highly recommended. ACTFL is an annual event. ACTFL 2006 will be held in Nashville, Tennessee.
