How Learning a Foreign Language Will Make You a Better Person

by Polly Glott

Parlez-vous français? No? What a pity. I've crafted some scintillating sentences in French to tell you all about how learning a foreign language can change your life and make you a Better Person (with a capital B!), sentences as sweet and airy as éclairs, that would delight your ears, but if you haven't bothered to learn French (and it's really no bother at all - I did it this year almost without trying, while driving to and from my office), well, then, I'll have to confine myself to English. (I assume that, having stuck with it so long, you've completely mastered English by now and won't be startled when I toss you an odd bibelot from time to time?)

So now, at long last, we can begin. I suspect that you're already starting to get the idea that it would have been much easier for both of us if you'd just learned French in the first place. If you have the urge to run upstairs right now and rifle through your bookshelves looking for that beginning French course you bought years ago, I won't be offended. Au contraire - I'd consider my point to be well taken.

What, you're still reading? Where was I? Ah, yes. Learning a foreign language will make you a Better Person. Learning a foreign language WILL make you a Better Person. It's true. I, for example, am a much better person now than I was when I spoke only my native tongue. You can ask my friends. You can even ask my enemies (learning a foreign language can make you a better adversary as well - but that's a topic for another time).

How does learning a foreign language make you a Better Person? For one, it makes you a more useful citizen of the planet. For two, it makes you more versatile (language being a sort of yoga of the mind). And for three, it increases your attention span and allows you to focus more clearly. (Don't believe me? Researchers at Cornell University back me up here: http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/May09/bilingual.kids.sl.html). Increased attention and clearer focus? We all know what that leads to…enlightenment. Voilà!

Okay. That's all the English I have time for now. I've got a rendezvous with a glass of Beaujolais and a roman d'espionnage. Given what I've just shared with you, I'll expect you to be a little better prepared the next time we meet. Au revoir!
