Portuguese is a Romance language which evolved from the Latin spoken by the peoples of the Iberian Peninsula 2000 years ago, mainly in Galicia and northern Portugal. Portuguese is a member of the west Iberian branch of the Romance languages, and is closely related to Galician and Spanish. Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Príncipe, and a co-official language of East Timor and Macau.
