Bilingual Education Pioneer Dies at 80
Antonia Pantoja, an advocate for New Yorkers of Puerto Rican origin, died in Manhattan recently at the age of 80. Her educational organization, Aspira, won a landmark lawsuit in the 1970s that brought bilingual education to New York City public schools. Ms Pantoja was motivated partly by the fact that Spanish-speaking students in New York City schools had a drop-out rate of about 80% at that time. By allowing them to continue studying in their native Spanish, many students were able to accomplish more and the drop-out rate was vastly reduced. Today, the debate continues. Bilingual education is now being banned in some places, including California.

Question: Dafydd Goff of London, UK asks, "What is the oldest language in the world?"
Answer: It is impossible to date the oldest spoken language because no recording devices were available. The oldest spoken language was little more than a few grunts and groans of pre-historic man. It's a little easier to guess with written languages. According to Joseph Foster, PhD Professor of Anthropology at the University of Cincinnati, Sumerian was the first known language to be written down.
