Landscape in the Mist
Theo Angelopoulos
Theo Angelopoulos' moving portrait of two sad-eyed children who traverse Greece in search of their father is a portrayal of loneliness, disillusionment and betrayal and the vision of a world that is both impersonal and unfeeling. The children's painful odyssey is fraught with terrifying figures, allegorical visions (a hand rising from the sea, a dead white horse outlined in the snow) and self-delusion. With Michalis Zeke, Tania Palaiologou, Eva Kotamanidou and Alika Georgouli. Greek with English subtitles. Greece/France/Italy, 1988, 125 mins.

The Weeping Meadow
Theo Angelopoulos
Part one of a trilogy planned by Greek master Theo Angelopoulos, The Weeping Meadow roughly spans the end of one great war to the next, 1919-1949. The narrative concerns the retelling of twentieth century Balkan history through the relationship of Alexis and his beautiful, orphaned sister, Elani. The mode, however, dates back to Ancient Greece, as sister and brother become forbidden lovers and are ultimately separated by war and revolution--the stuff of pure epic tragedy. In terms of camerawork and mise-en-scene, this film shares much with Angelopoulos' Ulysses' Gaze and Eternity and a Day, with long, calculated tracking shots capturing realities so harrowing they border on surrealism. Imposing, cryptic, and stunning in the same vein as Tarkovsky and Jansco. Includes interview with Angelopoulos, theatrical trailer, optional 5.1 audio. Enhanced for 16x9 TVs. In Greek with English subtitles. Greece, 2004, 170 mins.
