The Bothersome Man
Jens Lien
In Norwegian helmer Jens Lien's dystopia film, Andeas (Trond Fausa Aurvaag) arrives in the desert with no knowledge of how he got there and soon is taken to an unnamed city where he's given an apartment, new clothes, and an arranged marriage with Anne-Britt (Petronella Barker). Unfortunately, all the clothes are drab, the food is bland, the sex emotionless, and yet everyone wears a plastered smile. Both comical and bizarre, The Bothersome Man comments on the plight of the individual amidst the modern in imaginative ways. "If you're familiar with movie science-fiction dystopias (or anti-utopias), all the way from Fritz Lang's Metropolis...to Andrew Niccol's Gattaca, much of it will strike overfamiliar chords. But this movie is made with formidable assurance, a compelling look, quiet skill and impressive economy" (Michael Wilmington, The Chicago Tribune). Winner of the ACID Award at Cannes. Includes the short True Story by Stephanie Via. In Norwegian with English subtitles. Norway, 2006, 95 mins.
