Children of Heaven
Majid Majidi
A delightful, heartwarming tale from Iran, beautiful in its simplicity and deeply in touch with the feelings and insecurities of childhood. When a young boy loses his sister's only pair of shoes, they hatch a plan to share his shoes and keep his negligence a secret from their parents. "Children of Heaven is fraught with delicious irony, and the unaffected performances from its sad-eyed pair of non-actors in lead roles lend the film its understated poetry" (Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post). The DVD is letterboxed and includes optional English subtitles; a French language track; and more. In Persian with English subtitles; Iran, 1997, 83 mins.

Baran
Majid Majidi
From the director of Children of Heaven and The Color of Paradise comes this moving tale of the relationship between a young Iranian construction worker and an immigrant laborer from Afghanistan. A workplace rivalry disappears when the Iranian man realizes the Afghan worker is actually a teenaged girl desperately trying to provide for her needy family. The revelation changes both their lives as they now share a dangerous secret and possible romance. "...it's the saddest story of love in a long while, yet liberating in the way it instills a sense of oneness with all humanity" (Peter Howell, Toronto Star). In Farsi and Dari with English subtitles. The Color of Paradise
Majid Majidi
A blind boy, whose father sees him as a burden, struggles to adjust when he is forced to leave a school for the blind and becomes an apprentice to a carpenter. The boy also relates strongly and spiritually to the sounds of nature around him, and his deep connection to a world beyond the one created by man is the center of this beautiful, heartfelt motion picture. "...draws your deepest emotions with the simplest of stories...in the tradition of similarly affecting films about childhood suffering, including Francois Truffaut's The 400 Blows and Robert Bresson's Mouchette" (Desson Howe, Washington Post). From the director of Children of Heaven. The DVD is letterboxed and includes English, French and Spanish subtitles. In Farsi with English subtitles. Iran, 1999, 91 mins.

Father
Majid Majidi
Directed by Majid Majidi (Children of Heaven, Color of Paradise, Baran), this Iranian film is set in a working class milieu, and it tells the story of a teenage boy, who, after his father is killed in a traffic accident, has to leave school and start working in order to support his family. He is proud of being at such a young age the person bringing the bread to his poor family. But things change when his widowed mother marries a police officer. He regards this as a double betrayal, and he tries to make life for his family impossible. After putting his two young sisters in jeopardy (in a domestic oven, in one of the film's best scenes), he flees to a port city. The policeman follows him, and in the road back they found themselves in the desert. Eventually, and in extremis, adoptive father and son reconciles. In Persian with English subtitles. Iran, 1996, 96 min.
