Learn Chinese CD-ROMs The Chinese Cultural Learning Center, established in 1974 for the purposes of teaching Chinese language and culture, now offers a set of CD-ROMs for learning Chinese. Conversation includes 40 lessons that cover the basics of living, such as greetings, ordering meals at a restaurant, counting, days of the weeks, etc. Educational Stories (CD1 and CD2) include 15 stories each, along with the 'Story's Stories' at the end of each CD-ROM which explains why the stories were chosen to be included in the set. Modern Chinese Prose 1 has 10 articles written by Bājīn, Xiè Bīngyíng, and Bīngxīn; Modern Chinese Prose 2 has 8 articles written by Zhū Zìqīng, Dīng Líng, Liáng Shíqiū and Yè Shèngtáo. Each Chinese word is also written in pin-yin and translated literally into English; each sentence is also translated into colloquial English; and there are also versions with both complicated and simplified characters. To use, simply put the CD-ROM into the hard drive, wait a moment, and the Table of Contents will automatically appear on your screen; then choose a selection by clicking on the title. If you wish to listen, you can choose either Chinese or English. To change pages, click the page number located in the space between the complicated and simplified character versions. Also offered are book versions with the same content as the CD-ROMs.

Recently a set of Chinese-English self-learning materials has been edited, and Conversation, Educational Stories (CD1 and CD2), and Modern Chinese Prose (CD1 and CD2) have been published in CD-ROM format; a Classical Chinese CD-ROM will soon be published. The contents of each CD-ROM are also available in book format for those who prefer the more traditional methods of learning.

'Modern Chinese Prose' is suitable for those with some background in Chinese. Beginners should start with the pronunciation practice which is included in both the 'Conversation' CD and the 'Educational Chinese Stories' CDs.
The Chinese text of the conversation and stories were written or edited, and all English translations were done by Professor Lu-sheng Chong. They have been used as teaching materials and have been reviewed and revised by American students. When re-writing and translating, each individual has his or her own way of expressing the same ideas; thus, each version is unique.
