Language Teacher for Palm OS and Pocket PC Language Teacher is a software version of the Language Teacher electronic handheld dictionaries of Ectaco, Inc. that runs on Pocket PC's and computers with the Palm OS operating system, and is similar to the version for Windows. A large volume dictionary database and the ability to translate to and from a language allow you to select the exact translation according to your needs. The word-for-word translation mode is very useful when all you need is general sense of a phrase or sentence. Language Teacher allows instant word translation and reverse translation - to find a word in the dictionary, just start typing it in the Input Line, and a word beginning with the input letters will appear on the screen. You can see all possible translations of the selected word in the Translations List, and you can get the reverse translation by double-clicking on the word in this list. If you want to find a word or any sequence of letters, there is a Search function to find a word or its part throughout the entire dictionary database. On the Pocket PC version there is a Filtered List which allows you to create a customized list of words for frequent reference and use. Both Pocket and Palm versions support copy-and-paste data sharing with other applications when they support those operations. Language Teacher has built-in multilanguage support, which makes it easy to work with dictionaries on computers that do not support alternative characters. This takes either the form of remapping the keyboard to new characters, or a virtual keyboard that allows keyboard emulation for all languages that use Cyrillic, European, Baltic, Greek, or Turkish characters.

A word beginning with the input letters will appear on the screen. By pressing the pop-up trigger in the upper right corner you can change the direction of translation. You can use the virtual keyboard if your Palm device does not support the necessary language input. You can access the virtual keyboard by pressing the button to the right of the Input Line. You can install several Language Teachers for different languages on your Palm Pilot if it has enough free memory. Pop-up module The pop-up module is an extension to X-Master (HackMaster), which you will need to install first. You may also use any compatible hack manager you wish (for example, HackMaster). You can use the pop-up module to translate words without quitting the current application. It is activated with a simple (definable) pen stroke - and you can get back to your application with just one tap! You can exchange data with your application if it supports copy-and-paste, or if it has an input field. Symbols and operations can also be entered with graffiti. The pop-up module is invoked with the pen stroke from the Find to the Calculator silk screen button by default. You can set any other available stroke. SD/MMC standard support Now you can 1) store applications and/or databases on an extension card (SD/MMC), and 2) run an application from the main memory or the extension card independently of where the database is located.

Note: This FAQ is aimed at users of Language Teacher for Pocket PC; however many of the questions and answers are also relevant to Language Teacher for Palm OS.

What should I do, if the following message appears in the setup program: "There is not enough space on the mobile device. Required: 1,073.2 K, Available: 21.9 K. Do you want to continue anyway?"
Free up space on your PC, increase the storage space to the required size and press OK

I use Windows CE 2.0. If I copy Cyrillic text to the clipboard and insert it into other programs, I get just "garbage" instead.
These programs do not support Cyrillic.

How can I input Cyrillic letters and other symbols?
Choose a proper keyboard layout. The Pocket Language Teacher installs additional keyboard layouts for certain languages.

Is it possible to use the additional keyboard layout in other applications?
Yes. You will get "garbage" instead of your text, if you use Windows CE 2.0 and these programs do not provide support for a particular language.

How can I translate a word from another program?
Copy it to the clipboard, and click the LT icon at the bottom of your screen. This will switch you to the Language Teacher program, and if the parameter "Paste on activate" is active in the Properties dialog, the word will be translated automatically.
