Romance
Catherine Breillat
Controversial for its explicit sexual content, Catherine Breillat's Romance is as daring for its ideas as its eroticism. Involved in an affair that has stalled because her boyfriend refuses to have sex with her, a woman decides to explore other avenues in a series of intimate adventures. "A dark and unsparing study of female masochism and a brittle sex comedy of manners" (Amy Taubin, The Village Voice). This is the unrated version of the film. ADULTS ONLY. In French with English subtitles. France, 1999, 95 mins.

36 Fillette
Catherine Breillat
On a Biarritz family vacation, the 14-year old daughter, a very bored teenager, falls in love with an older man, who takes her to discos, seduces and abandons her. Catherine Breillat in her third feature fashions an insightful drama about sexual politics and male hypocrisy. With Jean-Pierre Leaud and Jean-Francois Stevenin. French with English subtitles. France, 1988, 86 mins.

Anatomy of Hell
Catherine Breillat
Catherine Breillat, the feminist director of controversial works like Fat Girl, again explores issues of body, sex, and gender in this intimate and erotic chamber drama. Amira Casar plays an unnamed woman who pays a handsome stranger (Rocco Siffredi) to watch her "where she's unwatchable". Breaking all boundaries and shedding all restraint, the two enter a daring exploration of sexuality at its most naked. "Breillat turns a philosophical speculum on gender relations to perverse (and perversely elegant) effect." (J. Hoberman, Village Voice). France, 2003, 80 mins.

Brief Crossing
Catherine Breillat
Catherine Breillat (Romance) explores the nature of human sexuality once again with this erotic drama detailing a chance encounter between two strangers. A 16-year-old French boy, Thomas meets Alice, a recently divorced, older British woman, on a night ferry and they spend the evening talking, dancing and moving towards an unconventional romance. In French with English subtitles. France, 2002, 80 mins.

Fat Girl
Catherine Breillat
Catherine Breillat offers an unflinching dissection of sibling rivalry and female adolescent sexuality in this bold coming-of-age drama. Twelve-year-old Anais (Anais Reboux) is a slightly over-weight girl with the weight of the world on her sholders, while her beautiful, fifteen-year-old sister, Elena, guides through life. Their love/hate relationship is captured perfectly during a summer vacation where Anais tags along with Elena and witnesses the corruption of her sister's innocence at the hands of an older, Italian college student. "Few movies have so effectively conveyed the alienation of adolescence, and the way children can be driven almost mad by their separation from life and love" (Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune). The DVD is a Criterion Collection Edition, and includes a behind-the-scenes featurette; the original French and U.S. theatrical trailers; an essay by film critic Ginette Vincendeau; an interview with Breillat, translated from the French film magazine, Positif; optional English subtitles; and more. In French with English subtitles. France, 2001, 86 mins.

Perfect Love (Parfait Amour!)
Catherine Breillat
Sexual provocateur Catherine Breillat (A Real Young Girl, 36 Fillette) presents a dark and disturbing portrait of a love affair that goes terribly wrong. The relationship between a couple separated by ten years begins magically but quickly turns to torment and tragedy. "Authentic and unsettling...[an] emotional see-saw" (Lisa Nesselson, Variety). In French with English subtitles. France, 1996, 110 mins.

A Real Young Girl
Catherine Breillat
Made in 1975, this first feature from Catherine Breillat (Romance, Fat Girl) went unreleased for 25 years; considered too explicit for art film venues and too adventurous for the pornography circuit. Breillat walks a fine line between realism and voyeurism with this graphic portrayal of a teenage girl's sexual awakening. While often erotic, the film also explores uncomfortable aspects of sexuality and includes some unsettling montages. "The film is the same, but public attitudes have advanced," Breillat said. "Now we'll see if viewers dismiss it as porn, or go beyond the images to the emotions and reflection they provoke." ADULTS ONLY. French with English subtitles. France, 1975/2000, 93 mins.

Sex is Comedy
Catherine Breillat
French provocateur Catherine Breillat explores her typical theme of male-female sexual relations in Sex is Comedy, but does so in a metafilmic context that differs from her other films. The result is a fresh and original inquiry that is probably Breillat's most accessible offering to date. Anne Parillaud plays Breillat's doppelganger, an arthouse director in the process of making a film about a young virgin and her aggressive suitor (akin to Breillat's Fat Girl). The director quickly forms an intimate bond with her lead actor (Gregoire Colin) and the pair spends much of the time flirting and fighting about sex, acting, and cinema. "An insightful glimpse into the mechanics of filmmaking" Film Threat. In French with English subtitles. France, 2004, 92 mins.
