The Disenchanted
Benoit Jacquot
A unique, poetic and sometimes disturbing view of adolescent passage from Benoit Jacquot, the director of A Single Girl and Seventh Heaven. The film follows a 17-year-old girl trying to find her way on a confusing path largely created by the sexual insecurities and economic needs of others. When her boyfriend makes the bizarre request that she prove her love to him by sleeping with the ugliest man she can find, young Beth (Judith Godreche) decides instead to use the challenge as a doorway to self-exploration. French with English subtitles. France, 1990, 80 mins.

Right Now (A Tout de Suite)
Benoit Jacquot
In this intrepid drama by Benoit Jacquot (The Disenchanted, The School of the Flesh), Isild Le Besco plays Lili, a young, beautiful, bored art student who impetuously falls in love with a small-time hood, Bada (Ouassini Embarek). After a botched bank robbery that ends in murder, Lili agrees to flee Paris with her wanted boyfriend. Disentranced and on the lam, she soon finds herself in compromising situations, both physical and metaphysical. This adaptation of Elisabeth Fanger's memoir When I Was 19 is partly a tale of youthful naivety gone awry, but also, with its plot and setting in mind, an homage to the French New Wave, especially Elevator to the Gallows, Les Bonnes Femmes, and Breathless. "Gorgeous black-and-white photography lends the movie a chilly documentary realism . . . Small, nearly perfect film" (Stephen Holden, The New York Times). In French with English subtitles. France, 2004, 95 mins.

Sade
Benoit Jacquot
Benoit Jacquot's intimate costume drama paints a sly and ruthless portrait of the Marquis de Sade (Daniel Auteuil) in the years he was incarcerated at Picpus, a prison for the elite with a country club atmosphere. While there, the 50-year-old de Sade educates a young, virginal viscount's daughter, Emile (Isild Le Besco), on life's carnal pleasures. In French with English subtitles. France, 2000, 100 mins.
