Beau Travail
Claire Denis
Based loosely on Herman Melville's Billy Budd, this is a visually stunning depiction of male rivalry, insecurity and sheer masculine beauty. Denis Lavant, the fascinating actor familiar from the films of Leos Carax, plays an officer in the Foreign Legion who feels his status is threatened by the arrival of a handsome and gifted young soldier (Gregoire Colin). He sets out to sabotage the career of the newcomer. Claire Denis punctuates the story with scenes of military training, brilliantly choreographed for the camera to emphasize the physicality that is the center of the film. "...a stunning work of beauty, mystery, contemplation, and grit" (Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle). French with English subtitles. France, 1999, 90 mins.

Friday Night
Claire Denis
Two strangers meet and inexplicably fall in love after a chance encounter during a traffic jam in this surreal romance. Director Claire Denis handles the subject with grace, ignoring any notions of fate or metaphysical involvement in the couple's meeting to focus entirely on their physical attraction and interactions, which are filmed with subtle precision. In French with English subtitles. DVD is letterboxed, and includes a commentary by Claire Denis and Kent Jones, filmographies, a trailer, and more. France, 2002, 86 mins.

I Can't Sleep
Claire Denis
Paralleling such recent jigsaw narratives as Red and Pulp Fiction, Claire Denis weaves together disparate fragments which gradually reveal the underlying connections between a group of disconnected characters: a tall Lithuanian blonde arrives in Paris looking for work as an actress; a West Indian musician pressures his wife to move back to Martinique; the police hunt a serial killer and a beautiful black queen performs in drag at a local nightclub. In a major atmospheric study of contemporary alienation, Denis beautifully captures the psychological undercurrents that haunt the modern urban world. French with English subtitles. France, 1995, 110 mins.

The Intruder
Claire Denis
Claire Denis (Beau Travail) explores themes of memory, perception, and mortality in an abstruse but rewarding metaphysical drama. Veteran actor Michel Subor stars as Louis, an aging loner who lives in a woodland compound on the French-Swiss border. After suffering a mild heart attack, Louis is forced to emerge from his isolation and begin a harrowing quest--first for an organ transplant, then for a long-lost son, and finally for an elusive sense of peace. Set alternately in South Korea and Tahiti, Denis' film is often inscrutable, but its visceral effects are lasting. "A fearless filmmaker's boldest experiment yet, a direct line from her unconscious to yours" (Dennis Lim, Village Voice). In French with English subtitles. France, 2004, 130 mins.
